"Late August, given heavy rain and sun / For a whole week the Blackberries would ripen." - from Blackberry-picking by Seamus Heaney
Bramble Planting |
Brambles are Blackberries and Raspberries. They grow wildly in patches, and produce prolifically for the home gardener. Store-bought brambles are expensive and have a short shelf-life.
Home bramble production is simple. A bed is created for the brambles and a trellis is erected to keep them in control and off the ground. The max span of a trellis is 6', therefore a patch that is 18' long should have three trellises. |
Bramble Maintainence |
Brambles benefit from fertilization. Bramble fertilization programs can be found in more detail on the Soil Fertility page.
Brambles also benefit from irrigation, especially while they are fruiting. Information on Drip Irrigation Systems can be found on the Drip Irrigation page of the website. Brambles can be mulched with wood chips, which helps them retain moisture and keeps weeds out of your patch. More information on mulching can be found on the Mulch section of the website. |
