Soil Fertility
Management

Food for Your Food

A soil sample will tell us what your vegetable garden, strawberry patch or apple tree needs to thrive. The next step is having these nutrients added to your soil. Wilson Home Farms uses organic fertilizers and soil amendments, usually Fertrell Products, to amend your soil.

Available Fertilizers:
Fertilizers are applied for direct use by the plant.
  • Super N - Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for vegetative growth, and is the hardest to retain in your soil
  • Berry Mix - A special blend for Brambles, Blueberries, and Strawberries
  • Aragonite - A source of Calcium for your plants - it does not contain Magnesium which often ties up nutrient availability
  • Soil Mineralizer - a fertilizer used to improve the health of your soil. It adds calcium, trace minerals, salt and sulfur which aid in healthy root structure.
  • Gold Starter- eadily available phosphorus speeds germination and promotes rapid and vigorous growth.

Available Soil Amendments:
Soil amendments are used to correct a problem in your soil such as a phosphorus deficiency.
  • Phostrell - Used to correct Phosphorus deficiency
  • Blood Meal - Quick-release Nitrogen fertilizer, used to correct Nitrogen deficiency
  • Feather Meal - Slow-release Nitrogen fertilizer, used to correct Nitrogen deficiency
  • Green Potash - Provides available source of potassium as well as a vast array of micro-nutrients in trace amounts.
  • Epsom Salt - Used to correct Magnesium deficiency
  • Gypsum - A calcium source for a garden that has an adequate pH. It aids in loosening the soil structure.
  • Lime - Used to raise soil pH and help release phosphorus.
  • Sulfur - Used to drastically lower soil pH
  • Hollytone - Used to maintain a lower soil pH

Fertilizer Programs

Basic Fruit Tree Fertilization

Advanced Fruit Tree Fertilization

Fruit tree fertilization is based on the size of the tree, based on the diameter of the trunk.
  • Super N is applied at 2 pounds per inch diameter in the spring
  • Soil Mineralizer  and Gold Starter are applied at 2 pounds per inch diameter in the fall
Advanced fruit tree fertilization adds foliar feeding to the program.

Liquid # 3 and Humic acid are sprayed on the trees twice in a season. The first application occurs when all the leaves come out of hibernation. The second application occurs two months later after the fruit is maturing.

This program includes pest management is further described on the Pest and Disease Control page
